I worked out with Bobby in the winter of 2006. It was approaching my next season with the New England Revolution, and I wanted to regain fitness and strength. Bobby took me through a work-out that was catered to my specific needs as a soccer player, by focusing on high-tempo cardiovascular drills, while also taking me through the necessary weight training. Our main goal was to isolate the muscle groups that I use most when I'm playing; mainly, my abdomen, legs and back. I enjoyed working with him and he got me to the point where I was ready to enter my pre-season schedule.

Bobby set up a driven and specific workout for me in the winter of '06, specifically designed to increase muscle endurance and continue to improve on my first step. At the professional level, a strong, explosive, burst can seperate a player to allow him the space needed to make an impact. Being a former soccer player, Bobby understood the importance of balancing my workouts to develope a good base through my offseason, while also increasing my muscle mass and endurance to be that one step quicker when preseason started with the Colorado Rapids in February of '07. We worked to improve my agility, core power, and muscular endurance; while not going overboard during the months my body was also recovering from a long season. The work was benefitial physically and I could even feel the improvement in those first few days of preseason. It was also enjoyable to work with an upbeat, knowledgable, and personable trainer who knows what it takes to balance being a dedicated athlete while also having a good time in the gym.

“I can’t, you can, I won’t, you will, I don’t want to, I don’t care”. For months on end, this was how the dialog went with Bobby, my newly hired trainer. I had attended a nutrition class he was teaching and I liked his energy and enthusiasm. I thought he would be able to motivate me to lose those last few pounds and to be more fit and healthy. But every time I showed up for my session there was that same annoying battle with my brain. I had not been raised with exercise as a part of my life so it was unnatural for me to do it. I knew it was necessary, but I didn’t enjoy it in the least. However, Bobby got me to the gym. He made it fun and engaging. He kept it fresh and interesting. He explained things in detail and knowledgeably answered my questions. But most importantly, he didn’t let me off the hook. He took the time to prove to me I could do it. He taught me good form and kept me focused. He never accepted my self-imposed limitations but rather showed me the possibilities. I still hate doing cardio and leg day is unbearable, but I have gotten results training with Bobby. I have lost 15 pounds and I look entirely different. I get stronger every week. Last week I even did 70 push-ups. Not bad for a girl who still thinks she can’t – but knows better than to say so.
